The Afentis, named after the mountain of the same name, is an exceptional Orange wine.
Made from the rare Glykada grape, an ancient clone of the Thrapsathiri grape. The vines are over 200 years old and grow at an altitude of 1,050 meters near Schinokapsala, located in southeastern Crete. It's no wonder, then, that it's one of the oldest wine regions in Europe.
The wine is fermented in traditional amphorae buried in the cellar. 21 days of skin contact produce the orange color and distinctive flavor. After removing the skins, the wine is aged for another six months in amphorae, followed by another two months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. Minimal intervention takes place in the winemaking process, meaning no sulfites, filtration, or fining.
On the nose, the Afentis impresses with notes of pickled peach, fresh apricots, Turkish delight, almond, and tea. Later, aromas of stewed pear, apricot, and Mediterranean herbs like thyme and fennel unfold.
On the palate, the wine reveals excellent tannin structure, complexity, and well-integrated acidity. Furthermore, this wine has great development potential. Limes, pear compote, ripe red grapefruit, orange peel, rosemary, and quince round out the complex flavor experience. The impressively long finish makes the wine truly special.
This wine goes very well with a wide variety of dishes.
Perfect with grilled fish, such as sea bass, goat cheese dishes, a fresh salad with citrus dressing, risotto with citrus and herbs, or even spicy dishes like roasted chicken with Mediterranean spices. Oriental cuisine and light meat dishes also pair well with this wine. Soft cheeses can also be a good match, such as goat cheese or white mold cheeses like brie.
Serving temperature is important and is: 10-12°C.
